Eyesores Bite the Dust

Blighted buildings remain but others came down in 2013.

Some of the eyesores that dot parts of Huntington finally went away in 2013, among them the Sitar restaurant on West Jericho Turnpike.

With a  sagging roof, walls with holes and a weed-choked parking lot and sidewalk, the site was demolished in November. The restaurant closed in 2008.

Also torn down this year was Empire Szechuan at 849 Walt Whitman Rd, Melville, another restaurant that closed in 2008.

Others remain, including:
  • Blockbuster store on East Jericho Turnpike just east of Route 110. It is covered in plywood and mostly fenced off.
  •  Former Dairy Barn at West Ninth Street and New York Avenue, still vacant as it has for several years.
  •  The former Antiques Browsery at Melville Road and East Jericho Turnpike, the edge of its roof and gutters caving in. The antiques store moved away and the property has been listed as foreclosed or for sale for months.
  •  Straight from the Heart on East Main Street, remains closed and the building empty.
