When Is The Best Time To Fertilize Your Lawn?

Many landscape and lawn care experts generally agree that late spring is a good time to fertilize. Many plants and trees have come out of dormancy and are either in their growing stage, leafing out, or flowering. It is the best time of year if you are a nature lover as all landscapes are new again!

To bring about the best results landscapes need plenty of water and nutrients. Lawns for example need a lot of nitrogen and it is recommended that they be fed during the three holidays for spring and summer which are Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. Potassium is very important for lawns during the summer to prevent stress and fungus. Potassium is a natural defense against fungus problems in the heat and humidity of summer. Rain Rich offers a great product that we use in our fertigation system that works well and is natural and does not harm the environment. It is organic and or natural and is safe for the environment, kids, and pets!

Our Long Island soils have plenty of phosphorus in them and no need to apply. However, the pH has to be correct for plants to obtain. Lawns are probably the most demanding in terms of fertilizer requirement.

All trees and ornamental can benefit from fertilizer during the spring and fall. They need much less nitrogen then a lawn does. Flowers will need a little more than trees and shrubs and much less than a lawn. If you are considering fertilizing your lawn, than use organic fertilizers as they are better for your lawn and the soil.

There is a huge problem on Long Island with nitrogen entering our Aquifer bays, and ocean.  Also, synthetic fertilizers – those that are high in Urea – damage the microorganisms in the soil and that is counterproductive to growing and maintaining a great lawn and landscape. One of the best aspects is that there is little or no waste as all the fertilizer is absorbed.
