What to do for your home between now and Thanksgiving

This past week we jumped from summer to fall weather.  It's important to prepare for winter now while the climate is still nice and we can work outdoors.  I have prepared this checklist to assist you in getting ready for winter, help save time, and money.

  • Winterize your sprinkler system.
  • Shut down all outside hose bibs and drain.
  • Disconnect all garden hoses, drain, and store away.
  • Tune up your heating system.
  • Change all filters on furnace and vents.
  • Install a home humidifier and/or clean the existing one.
  • Clean all gutters and leaders of leaves and debris.
  • Divert water from gutters & leaders away from home, basement, and window wells.
  • Install landscape drainage system.
  • Inspect and repair roof.
  • Test and repair your sump pump - if you have one.
  • Repair driveways and walkways.
  • Fertilize your lawn before November 1, 2013.  Suffolk County law prohibits fertilizing after November 1.
  • Test your smoke alarm.  Replace batteries.
  • Test your carbon monoxide alarm. Replace batteries.
  • Clean your chimney.
  • Caulk all windows and doors.
  • Remove screens from windows and store away.
  • Check your attic and basement for drafts & openings.
  • Insulate attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
  • Put patio furniture away.
  • Remove all pots, clean, and store.
  • Check outdoor lighting and make necessary repairs.
  • Install outdoor lighting and landscape lighting for security and safety.
  • Make sure your house # is visible from the road in case of emergency.
  • Purchase a water alarm for your home. (Contact us for yours today and we will ship it directly to you)!
  • Avoid the rush.  Purchase winter storm supplies now including batteries, candles, ice melt, snow shovels, snow blower, firewood, generator, gas can, etc.
