Lawrence Named Woman of Distinction

Tireless volunteer recognized by local legislator.

Huntington Station resident Alicia Lawrence has been named the Suffolk County District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2012. 

Established in 2002, the award gives county legislators a chance to honor a constituent who has demonstrated leadership, involvement and commitment to community outside of her job responsibilities, according to a press release.  

In presenting the award March 27, District 17 legislator Lou D'Amaro, D-Huntington Station, said Lawrence is a visible presence at almost any local event who is usually involved with the planning and non-glamorous ‘behind-the-scenes’ work that makes these events so successful.

“Alicia Lawrence never stops giving back to the community,” said D’Amaro, in a release. "I am privileged to honor someone that does so much for so many people.”

Lawrence is currently president of the Board of Directors of the Tri Community and Youth Agency, co-chair of the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative, serves as Monday night site coordinator at the and volunteers weekly at the Holiday House Thrift Shop.

In nominating Lawrence, Tri CYA Regional Director Debbie Rimler said the longtime Huntington resident volunteers quietly, without fanfare. 

“I can think of no other person who cares more about the community and gives more of herself than Alicia Lawrence," said Rimler.  

A retired 32-year secretrary and district clerk in Huntington, Lawrence is a member of the Town of Huntington’s Affordable Housing Task Force and is a hearing officer for the town’s Equal Employment Opportunity Complaint Review Committee. She is a former member of the Town of Huntington and was a three-term trustee for the .
