Cyber or Internet Tough Guys-Civil Discourse Chapter 2

Anonymous comments on the Internet do not stimulate discourse, they stifle it.

Nobody likes a bully and especially when the bully hides as we see some do on the Internet. The Internet has spawned a new means of communicating, that was inconceivable 20 years ago. With this new medium, we have seen a proliferation of new methods of bullying that cuts across all age groups. Freedom of Speech is a wonderful thing, cherished by most Americans. Speaking freely loses it's appeal when anonymous characters appear on the Internet and disparage or abuse someone who has something to say. I worked a large part of my life in the wholesale fish market, where i worked with some of the most physically and mentally tough individuals that I have ever seen. These men, right or wrong did not hide behind anything, much less a pseudonym. The cyber tough guys that inhabit the blogoshere are not really tough guys, because if they were they would not hide anonymously. Civil discourse takes place in many places, and the Internet is one of many forums. If we care to comment and debate, let us identify ourselves, and behave civilly.
