Whitman's 1,000 Points of Light

Whitman's Myles Jones and Alexandra Leftridge each reached the 1,000-point plateau in separate games Tuesday.

There are 1,000 reasons to watch Whitman on the basketball court this season. Make that 2,000 after a pair of players scored milestones on Tuesday.

Myles Jones and , good friends off the court, shared a rare feat on it when each reached the 1,000-point plateau in separate games.

Jones, a 6-foot, 4-inch senior, and his teammates were on the road. The Wildcats wrapped up the regular season with a 49-37 win over Connetquot. Whitman finished 12-6 and as League II champs.

"I dunked and people were patting me on the head," said Jones, who will play lacrosse at Duke. He shared the news in typical 21st century fashion. He posted it on Facebook.

Leftridge, whose high school career began at nearby Glenn, has starred for the Whitman team the last three seasons. Her varsity career reached a new high on Tuesday at home in the regular season finale against Connetquot. The Wildcats (15-3) scored a 75-18 win and the 5-foot, 9-inch Leftridge notched her 1,000th point.

“I didn't know,” Leftridge said of the milestone. “Everybody kept it a secret. Right after I scored, the buzzer went off. I wondered what's going on. My coach unzips a bag and brings out a ball with 1,000 points written on it. I fell on the floor and was crying. My family was all there. I thought it was just because it was my senior game. This was the greatest feeling in the world.”

Then Leftridge, who is being recruited by Boston University and Prairie View A&M, let the world know the news in typical teen fashion: She Tweeted.

Jones, who knew he was closing in on the historic mark, also Tweeted: "Inducted into the Career 1000 point club! #buckets." He shares the honor with some great former Wildcats: Antoine Agudio, Nick Carter, Kyheem Green and Tom Gugliotta are a few former standouts to join the club.

Then Jones congratulated Leftridge, who he refers to as his little sister.

"The stars and the moon and everything was aligned in the universe," Leftridge said of sharing the moment and feat with Jones. "It was really cool."

As rare as this may seem, it’s hardly unheard of. A pair of Red Jacket High School (Shortsville, N.Y.) boys basketball players each hit the 1,000-point mark in the same game on Feb. 1.

The moment was special nonetheless.

"It's the first time in Suffolk that I can remember," Whitman athletic director Jim Wright said. "They're both great role models, good students, a credit to their families. We're going to miss them terribly in June."

There's still plenty of basketball to play. Both teams should be a force in the Suffolk playoffs.
