No More Friday Night Lights at Whitman

Whitman High moves Friday night football game to Saturday afternoon following incident after homecoming celebration last weekend.

A group of teenagers caused a little too much commotion following the Whitman football team's loss to Commack in last Friday night's homecoming game. So much so that the team's next home game, originally scheduled for Friday night at 6 p.m. against Sachem East, has been moved to Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

"While the district runs a tight ship on the campuses of all of their schools, Suffolk County's Second Police Precinct has recommended that [Whitman] football games be moved to all day games to be able to help control to flow of youngsters after they leave district property," said South Huntington School District Spokesperson Steve Bartholomew. "The safety of our students is always a concern, on or off our campus, and the district has no problem accommodating their suggestion."

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, a large group of teenagers left the Whitman campus following the football game on Sept. 24 and went to the McDonald's restaurant on nearby Jericho Turnpike. Police received a call at 9:01 p.m. reporting that students were standing on tables and yelling at patrons, causing what one employee called "an unsafe situation."

Officers responded to the scene, after the students refused to leave the premises, and McDonald's was temporarily closed. After police eradicated the situation at McDonald's, the teenagers went and caused the same issues at both Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts on Jericho Turnpike. Police said both restaurants were also closed temporarily. No arrests were made, according to police.
