Tell Us: Regulate Energy Drinks?

Should Suffolk county restrict the sale of energy drinks like Red Bull to people under 19?

Suffolk Legislator William Spencer (D-Centerport) proposed a resolution to the New York State House of Delegates of the New York State Medical Society to restrict the marketing and sale of high-energy/stimulant drinks to children under the age of 19.

Spencer is chairman of the Legislature’s Health Committee and stated in an opinion piece published on Patch Wednesday that mounting evidence shows high caffeine drinks to be a danger to children.

"There can be long-term medical harm and even sudden death in certain circumstances," he wrote.

According to CBS New York, an energy drink company spokesman said a ban would create a slippery slope. Coffeehouses would also need to ask for ID before serving coffee or tea to young patrons.

But coffee and tea don't contain the same amount of caffeine per serving as most energy drinks.

Tell us, do you think that the sale of energy drinks like Nos, Red Bull, and Monster should be restricted to people under age 19?

Your headline should read "under 18".

naw, give it a week or so. I am sure pretty soon we will all be regulated. First we do it for the children, then the rest of you who can't think for yourselves.

This makes a lot of sense---this has nothing to do with a parent's decision to provide their children with caffeine in any format--it's about restricting companies from targeting children.

Companies shouldn't be selling energy drinks to kids--period. Caffeine is a drug capable of interacting with medical conditions and hurting kids who don't know better. Parents should make decisions for their kids with this stuff, not the other way around. I am glad the legislature is looking at this and protecting our children.
