Huntington Notebook: Youth Speak Out

Town session set for teens to raise issues.

Councilwoman Glenda A. Jackson is sponsoring Youth Speak Out, for teenagers in the Town of Huntington to discuss issues of concern to them. Peer pressure and neighborhood violence were among issues cited by teens. The session is scheduled for Thursday, 6:30 to 9 p.m.  at the Tri-CYA office, 809 New York Ave., Huntington Station. Students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to participate. Members of the clergy, the Tri-CYA and the Huntington Youth Bureau will be on hand.

Suffolk County police will be explaining the police exam Wednesday at  7 p.m. at the .  The deadline is March 31 to register for the June 11 written examination.

Applicants must be a minimum of 19 years old on the date of the written test; Eligibility for appointment as a police officer, age 20; Maximum age, 34 years.

The contentious matter of AvalonBay and a once-defeated plan to build in Huntington Station has arisen again. Two members of the Town Board and Supervisor Frank Petrone have been discussing the possibility of reviving a scaled-back version of the proposal to build dozens of units on property near the LIRR station. AvalonBay, which has properties in several Long Island communities, including Melville, is considering the feasibility of producing a new plan.
