Hairr, 3 Incumbent Trustees Re-elected in Lloyd Harbor

Big turnout for election but village board composition unchanged.

Mayor Leland Hairr and three incumbent trustee candidates were re-elected in Lloyd Harbor Tuesday to four-year terms.

Hairr, who has served since 1999, defeated mayoral challenger George Schertl 492-319.

In the board of trustees election, the totals were Jean Thatcher, 496; Leland Deane, 487; Hilary Rolih, 485; Sandra Bianco, 321; Kierean McGowan, 323; and Danielle Sulger, 309.

Top three finishers Thatcher, Deane and Rolih, all current of trustee members, will retain their seats on the board.

Like Hairr, Thatcher has served since 1999. Rolih was first elected in 2003 and Deane has served as a trustee since 2006.

The predominant issue among voters coming from the polls between noon and 9 p.m. Tuesday was village preservation and land use.

"Keeping the village a rural setting as much as possible," said Ed Smith of Lloyd Harbor, standing in line to register at village hall today.

Longtime resident Mary Lenore Blair said she is most concerned about maintaining the natural beauty and the general atmosphere of the place.

"Under-development please, and not having to develop every square inch," said Blair, a Long Island native and a resident of Lloyd Harbor for 16 years.

The village board is composed of the mayor and six trustees who serve staggered terms. Trustees Ralph Alfenito, William Burdo and Matthew Strunk ran unopposed in 2009.

The board meets the third Monday of each month, except in January, February and August. Elections are held every two years.
