Don't Toss That Plastic

The Town of Huntington is urging boatowners to recycle their plastic winter wrap.

Shrink-wrapping boats for the off season has become popular in recent years, as opposed to simply covering them with tarps.

And, as the boating season fast approaches, town officials are urging boaters who use the shrink wrap to think first before tossing it following the seasonal unwrapping.

To that end, Huntington will provide a special bin at its 2010 Earth Day Family Expo on Saturday, April 24 in the rear parking area of Town Hall for disposal of the wrapping.

For those who can't make it on April 2, the material can be dropped off at our Recycling Center at 641 New York Avenue through Memorial Day weekend.

The Town is urging its boating residents to dispose of this material in a manner that will enable it to be recycled. "The Department of Waste Management is working with a local company to recycle this material," stated Cuthbertson. "This will help keep tons of this material out of our Resource Recovery Facility."

The average boat takes 14 pounds of shrink wrap to be winterized.
