Clinton Avenue Lot Reopens

Reconstructed Huntington parking lot opens to traffic Friday.

Huntington’s parking war is about to get reinforcements, just in time for the weekend.

The Clinton Avenue municipal parking lot reconstruction project wrapped up Friday, a little more than a month after it began.

A foreman for J. Anthony Enterprises Inc. of Bohemia, who the Huntington Town Board paid $286,209, said the firm had 90 days to do the work and finished in 28 working days.

The notoriously dark and uneven lot was prone to flooding. It’s closure was also a concern for local merchants hoping fewer parking spots wouldn't impact their business.

But Roberto Ornato, owner of Jonathan’s Ristorante on Wall Street, said the improvements were necessary.

“I had customers complaining about various issues, the lack of light at night and security,” Ornato said. “And there was no parking for the handicapped. It was like a lake when it rained. Seeing these improvements gives me optimism. We needed it.”

The project, which began Sept. 4, included the construction of new curbs, sidewalks and pavement, landscaping repairs, standardization of traffic lanes, streetlights and new traffic signage.

The Town also added surveillance cameras for public safety.
