Car, Home Break-Ins Continue in Huntington Bay

Village police chief says while there were no major crimes this summer, car and home break-ins escalated.

Huntington Bay Police Chief Raymond Hubbs said the village continues to deal with a rash of car break-ins at the Board of Trustees' September meeting.

"Mostly we had a very good summer," Hubbs said. "We haven't had any major crimes, but the car break-ins are still an issue."

Hubbs reported that there was one car break-in earlier this month and that it is believed that the thefts are being committed by various suspects.

"It seems to be the crime de jour," he said. "Our residents still aren't locking their cars."

Hubs added that the main item taken during these break-ins are GPSs, but that as of recently, however, the thieves have also stolen, and used, credit cards taken from the vehicles.

Furthermore, Hubbs said, several home break-ins were reported during the summer months. "They went into the unlocked houses when people were sleeping at night, and rummaged around and grabbed a few things," he said. "There seems to be a slight escalation in this activity."

Hubbs said detectives continue to investigate these crimes and hopes the suspects are caught soon.

"Even if we catch one guy, I don't know that it's going to totally stop," Hubbs said. "It seems to be an epidemic."
