Boating Victim's Memorial Set for Playground

Town Board approves placement at Heckscher Park.

A girl who was killed in a July 4 boating accident will be memorialized at Heckscher Park playground.

Victoria Gaines, a Huntington resident, was one of three children who died when a boat capsized and sank after a fireworks show in Oyster Bay. She was 7 years old.

The Huntington Town Board approved the creation of a memorial garden, including a small statue, inside the fenced-in playground. The Gaines family will cover the costs of the work while the town will assist with the installation of the statue and plantings.
