Bay Board Takes Up Construction, Sand

FEMA reimburses village for March storm costs.

The Huntington Bay Village Board Monday night discussed residential housing construction, the budget and preparation for the probable snowstorm this week.

Neal Hoffman presented the application for construction on the property of 354 Bay Ave. The property required a steep slope special permit application for the construction of garden walls. The property owners were also making conversions to the first floor and constructing a partial second floor above the two-car garage. The board approved the proposed renovations, but neighbor Jay Cavanagh voiced his worries about what the pending construction would do to the narrow Bay Avenue.

“I’m concerned about damage on the road and damage to neighbors’ properties,” he said.

The board ultimately decided that if construction trucks took an alternative route and parked in the beach parking lot it would allow for less damage and congestion on Bay Avenue.

The board then discussed the order of more sand to prepare for this week’s impending snowstorm.

“We use anywhere from one million to two million pounds of sand per winter,” board member and road commissioner Dennis Gai said.

The order for sand clocked in at approximately 350 tons.

The board also announced that it had just received its reimbursement check from FEMA for the $32,000 the town fronted in order to help fix Huntington Bay after it was declared a disaster area due to storm damage in March.

Finally, the board discussed the impending budget for the 2011-2012 year. Mayor Herb Morrow hopes to have the budget revised and ready for next month’s meeting so the board can approve it. The board also plans to have its noise ordinance plan revised by February’s meeting as well.
