SCPD Plans Weekend Crackdown on DWIs, BWIs and Fireworks

Multi-faceted holiday weekend efforts will also include an increased number of on-duty 911 operators.

Police say they will add extra patrols to crack down on those driving or boating while intoxicated or impaired in both boats and vehicles this Independence Day weekend.

The department will also be on the lookout for illegal fireworks displays and will have more 911 operators on duty to ensure officers are informed of incidents quickly.

According to a press release,  Suffolk County Police Department's Highway Patrol Safe-T team will aggressively target DWI offenders and extra DWI patrols will be provided throughout all precincts.  The department's Marine Bureau will conduct enhanced Boating while Intoxicated patrols to ensure safety on Suffolk County waterways. 

Police will also be protecting residents from the dangers of illegal fireworks displays.  Plainclothes officers will conduct proactive patrols to identify those using fireworks illegally, and Community Oriented Police Enforcement (COPE), Emergency Service Section and K-9 officers will be on patrol in to help ensure a safe holiday for all. 

In addition, the department's new Community Response Unit (CRU) provide enhanced patrols in villages and town parks.

Suffolk police will also increase the number of 911 operators on-duty this holiday weekend, and urge residents to only call 911 in case of an emergency. 

Residents are reminded to call (631)852-COPS in those instances in which a non-emergency police response is needed, such as to firework complaints, loud parties or other disturbance.
