Mall Evacuated After Gas Line Break

Walt Whitman Shops cleared out after plow hit gas line.

Walt Whitman Shops was evacuated Monday afternoon following a gas line break, according to Suffolk County Police

No one was hurt in the break, said police, which reportedly happened when a snow plow hit a gas line near a construction site around 2:06 p.m.

The line was repaired by National Grid and the mall was reopened around 2:49 p.m., a spokesperson for National Grid confirmed.

Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove also closed Monday after more than 25 stores in the mall reported roof leaks.

Walt Whitman Shops is still in the midst of an expansion that began in April. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall.

It was the construction crew with a backhoe, not the snow plows.

That makes a lot more sense.Unless of course the union plumbers are running gas lines above ground thinking no one will notice.

National Grid confirms it was a contractor snow plow.
