Huntington Motorcyclist Loses Leg in Crash

Auto driver charged in West Babylon accident late Sunday.

A Huntington motorcyclist lost his leg Sunday night when he was struck by a driver in West Babylon.

Suffolk County police said Raymond Card, 48,  was driving his 2000 Yamaha motorcycle north on Belmont Avenue in West Babylon when he was struck at the intersection of Van Buren Street by a 2003 Chrysler.

He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where doctors surgically removed his left leg below the knee.

The driver of the Chrysler, James Kavanagh, 22, of West Babylon, was attempting to make a turn from southbound Belmont Avenue onto eastbound Van Buren Street, police said. Kavanaugh was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while his ability was impaired by drugs.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Card was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where doctors surgically removed his left leg below the knee.
