Huntington Man Killed in East Northport Crash

A 94-year-old Huntington man was killed after the ambulette in which he was being transported was hit by another vehicle.

A 94-year-old Huntington man was pronounced dead at Huntington Hospital after the ambulette in which he was being transported was struck by a vehicle in East Northport.

Ulysses Taylor of Amsterdam Street in Huntington was one of two passengers in an ambulette being driven for Care and Comfort Associates, Inc. of Patchogue. The vehicle was traveling west on Third Avenue in East Northport when the ambulette was hit by a 1998 Ford Explorer.

That vehicle was driven by Laurie Tjornhom, 49, of Fort Salonga. She and her two children, who were passengers in the vehicle, were traveling south when the crash occurred at 5:10 p.m. at the intersection of Third Avenue with Third Street.

The other passenger in the ambulette, being driven by Spiro Bekas of Bay Shore, was Lorraine Shanahan, 71, of East Northport.

All six people were transported to Huntington Hospital

Taylor was pronounced dead at the hospital. Shanahan was listed in critical condition with head injuries. Bekas was treated for broken ribs and a shoulder injury. Tjornhom was treated and released for minor injuries, and her children were uninjured.

The vehicles were impounded for a safety inspection. The investigation is continuing.
