Another Hit-and-Run: Man Hurt on E. Jericho

Pedestrian crossing near Manor Road is hit by vehicle as driver flees.

A man crossing Jericho Turnpike was struck and seriously injured Sunday night by a driver who fled the scene.

It was the second hit-and-run accident of the day. Early Sunday morning, a pedestrian was killed when a car struck him on New York Avenue in Huntington Station.

Suffolk County police Second Squad detectives said that Richard Wright was walking north across Jericho Turnpike, west of Manor Road, when he was struck by a vehicle that may have been traveling east on Jericho Turnpike.

Wright, 31, of Huntington, was airlifted by a Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is listed in serious condition with a broken leg, broken hip and head injuries.

The vehicle, which may have been gray, fled the scene. Detectives believe the vehicle may have front-end damage. The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m.  Despite the dark, a skid mark was clearly visible at the scene, which is directly across the street from the Dix Hills Plaza.
