Empty in Huntington: Former Sitar Restaurant Site

Tell us what you want on the vacant property.

Walk down Main Street or drive down Route 110 in Huntington Station and you will notice some vacant storefronts adorned with "For Rent" signs, a possible indication of the hard times the area — and country — are facing.

The Town of Huntington hasembarked on a  to spark economic growth in the area and fill empty sites with businesses and housing.

Huntington Patch will spotlight empty properties to foster discussion in the community on what can, should and could be done to rehab abandoned places.

This week's property is the former Sitar Restaurant at 665 Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station which closed in 2008.

how about a comedy club...
Greg Fasolino January 31, 2012 at 03:52 AM
Jason, if you live in Huntington north of 25A (or even anywhere north of the train station), and you do most of your grocery shopping at Trader Joe's as I do, then yeah, the 40-minute round trip to the store in Commack gets to be a pain. Having one close to 110 would be terrific. It's also worth noting that the Commack location is next to a Best Buy and a Panera, among others. Those stores are also at the Whitman Mall area, but nobody thinks that's too close or "10 min down the road". Commack is not convenient at all.

Enough with the bookstore, try the library, we have enough drugs store and restaurants that have trouble filling seats. One of the large abandaned properties should be converted into an recreation center for the teens, somewhere that the kids can go after school and stay off the streets. Something affordable and fun with a safe setting.

@Lisa there are actually lots of resources for children in Huntington, from the YMCA to the TRI-Community and Youth Agency. But personally, I'd like to bring the 1980s video arcade back.
Judy January 31, 2012 at 04:35 PM
would prefer not to see an arcade. The High School is nearby and that could be a distraction. The parking lot is not big enough for a major store like TJ's. The space can only accomodate a Deli or modest restaurant. Maybe a speciaty store; sports, or bagel place. A GOOD Chinese /Japanese restaurant or BBQ place would be good, also.

@Pam - Aldi's said no or you don't want them there? Aldi's is a excellent choice for Huntington Station - the location could be the soon to be closed Waldbaums. The one in Bay Shore is actually managed by a person that lives in Huntington Station! It is a good solid chain that offers quality products at a reasonable price. This past weekend we passed a new one in the works out by the Smithhaven mall... Aldi's is coming to Long Island and I hope one lands in Huntington. Just saying :)
Pam Robinson (Editor) January 31, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Mary, Aldi's says it's not coming to Huntington.
Mary Z January 31, 2012 at 10:38 PM
Pam - How do you know that?
Pam Robinson (Editor) January 31, 2012 at 10:46 PM
From reporting out a couple of related stories.
Pam Robinson (Editor) January 31, 2012 at 10:52 PM
Ah, let me clarify. Aldi's isn't coming to the Waldbaum's site in Huntington Station or a couple of other sites we asked about. If there's a third or other site in Huntington Village or nearby, that I wouldn't know about at this point.
Lisa January 31, 2012 at 11:20 PM
First of all what is an Aldis' I have never heard or saw that before now. Plus the best thing to go in one of those empty locations would be a Hale & Hearty Soup. They have one in Carl Place and its just a terrific soup place, plus they have sandwiches too!
Mary Z January 31, 2012 at 11:30 PM
See my explanation above or better yet, Google it!
Nicole Andrews January 31, 2012 at 11:35 PM
I know it is not healthy, but I would love to get Cold Stone and Krispy Kreme back! The closest Cold Stone now is in Babylon Village and the only place I can find a Krispy Kreme shop is Penn Station.
Nicole Andrews January 31, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Pizza Hut and Quiznos were also staples of Huntington Station that are no more.

Hamburger choo choo ? A re-run ? Pipe dream, I know.

Empty in Huntington - as well as Checkers and Sitar - what about the following big stores that are now vacant - Toys r Us, Barnes and Noble, Blockbusters, Love My Shoes, Soon to be Waldbaums, Soon to be Mandees, Sbarro's and Mc Donald's at the Mall , Claire's and Sweets from Heaven in the Mall, Spoke with someone in the mall who said that a lot of the new stores coming are up market - both Cartier and Tiffany's are coming - not sure they are good for the climate that is here! We do need a new Chinese! I know Aldi's from Ireland - they are all over there and are a great very reasonable supermarket - Word is that there is a supermarket coming in to Waldbaums ??? All in all it a scary sign of the times !!
Linda Otta February 01, 2012 at 02:45 AM
Hi Hope, The buses are all privatly owned compaines contracted to the schools. They are not really part of the school as you might understand the school structured budget process. I have been learing so much this year with the open budget process at the local school districts. You should go to yours. I have never seen the school budget explained so thourghly because of all the cuts- backs and the 2% tax cap.
Linda Otta February 01, 2012 at 02:48 AM
and Harley Davidson is empty now too!
Big_E February 01, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Sounds like they are trying to make WW Mall a "destination" center, like Roosevelt Field. The question is, will it work?
Dave February 01, 2012 at 02:42 PM
Seriously? When did HD close?
Pam Robinson (Editor) February 01, 2012 at 02:44 PM
It closed about two weeks ago.
Big_E February 01, 2012 at 02:47 PM
http://www.lighthousehd.com/ Dec 26, 2011. Though they had a liquidation day on Jan 14 2012
Jim R. February 01, 2012 at 08:03 PM
10 min down the road? Like Greg Fasolino says, when you live in north Huntington, it takes 10 min to get to 25A!
Pam Robinson (Editor) February 01, 2012 at 08:23 PM
When you ride with Jason, everything is 10 minutes--or less--away.
Jonathan Dees February 02, 2012 at 02:22 AM
Why did Sbarro's and McDonald's at the WW Mall close? Just saw that tonight.
FYI February 02, 2012 at 05:48 PM
We already have Town Hall...
BK13 February 02, 2012 at 06:57 PM
WTF is going on here? Too many big name businesses either leaving us at the alter (Lowe's) or just plain leaving.
Big_E February 02, 2012 at 09:20 PM
I would say ask our representatives on the Town Board, but being as none of them are actually FROM Huntington Station, their silence speaks volumes.
Robert W February 03, 2012 at 02:59 AM
Sorry Jason looking for affordable. Have you seen what the Y charges?
Mary Z February 03, 2012 at 09:41 AM
