Take Care of Your Pets at Holiday

For many Americans, Thanksgiving is among their favorite days of the year. If this is true in your family, then it is most likely important to you to be able to include your beloved pet in the celebration. While many pets enjoy the holidays just as much as their people, The Willow Pet Hotel would like to offer a few helpful tips to make sure this Turkey Day is fun and safe for all.               

1. A small amount of plain turkey might make a nice treat for your pet, but spicy or seasoned food, and large quantities of any “people food” could wreak havoc on your furry friend’s digestive system.
2. A small amount of high-fat food like turkey skin or juices can be beneficial to your pet’s skin and coat. Try keeping a jar of juices (as long as they are not spicy or heavily seasoned) in the fridge and pouring a spoonful over your pet’s food every meal until you run out.
3. If you want to throw your dog a bone, opt for nylabones, rope bones, kongs or another store-bought bone designed for dogs. Turkey bones will splinter, and shards can easily get caught in your dog’s throat or intestinal tract. Also remember that dogs can choke on rawhide.
4. There are some holiday treats that can be downright poisonous to dogs, so don’t be afraid to remind friends and relatives not to slip a spoonful of stuffing under the table during dinner. Dangerous foods include onions, raisins, grapes, bread dough, avocado, and chocolate.
5. Keep a close eye on children and pets during a holiday party. Even if your dog or cat is used to kids, the excitement can sometimes be a little too much.
6. If you have a very energetic pet, it might be wise to take him on a long walk or bring him to a doggy daycare facility for some extended playtime before guests arrive. This way, you might tire some of the rambunctiousness out of him!  
7. Make sure all your dogs and cats have ID tags before the big day, and try to keep them secluded as guests come and go. Pets can easily slip out unnoticed while family members linger in the doorway.
8. If you are unsure whether your pet will be comfortable and well-behaved around people, err on the side of caution. Keep dogs and cats who might be overwhelmed by company in a closed-off part of the house with plenty of food, water, and toys so that everyone can enjoy their day without stress. You can also leave a TV or stereo on a kid-friendly station on a normal volume. This can help ease their stress.
