Dianna Needs Out of the Shelter by August 15!

 PLEASE SHARE DIANNA!
We've featured Dianna many times on our Facebook page in the past. She now has very limited time to be homed. We urge you to SHARE this post far and wide.

From one of our Dog Program volunteers...
"I have been sitting for 20 minutes with my hands on the keyboard, unable to type a word. Trying to ignore the sickness in my stomach, the lump in my throat, the ache in my heart as I struggle to find the words that will save our beloved Dianna: Her expiration date has come to light.

Dianna, the ubiquitous tan pitbull whose face our dog volunteers have seen every weekend at the shelter for the past 3 and a half years. Dianna who has never welcomed visitors standing in front of her kennel, yet delightfully greets them in a meeting room. The one who gets too excited when playing and mouths inappropriately, but also the same one that walks right beside you on lead, waiting for your cues. Pudgy Dianna, who is never too full for 'one more treat'. The one who loves to curl up in a blanket because it feels so much better on her belly than the concrete she's been sleeping on all these years. The girl who does not always want to give up the toys she rarely gets to play with, but who brings them to you to throw. Dianna, the dog that was originally named Diamond, but whose owners didn't treat her as valuable when they dropped her off all that time ago. I guess the name was appropriate... she was and still is, a diamond in the rough. One that will sparkle if polished by kind, loving hands. Her owner made sure to tell us that she was a good dog and well-behaved in the house. Then they got in their car and drove away.

Dianna.... our 'dog away from home' -- she belongs to all of us, yet sadly, none of us.

We gave her a new name in the hopes that it would mean a new beginning. Hoping that someone loving and experienced would see all the wonderful qualities she has. Since then, Dianna has spent all this time waiting. Soon there will be no more waiting. Her destination far from the one we envisioned for her. I want to cry, but I am numb. I cannot imagine walking into the shelter without her there to greet me. I will surely fall apart.

Until such time, I will hope and pray that someone out there realizes that they are 'The One'. That she is 'The One'. And that I can take Going Home photos instead of Last Day photos. And rather than bawling my eyes out in grief, I sob from sheer happiness.

Amazingly, I came across this quote on Positively Positive tonight...

'The hero is the one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by. The saint is the man who walks through the dark paths of the world, himself a light.' — Felix Adler"

We are seeking a permanent or an approved foster home immediately. (Fostering includes all related expenses paid by League for Animal Protection of Huntington.) Dianna would do best as an only pet, but could be placed with another submissive dog. Her caretakers should not have small children or a busy household. They should be willing to seek the assistance of a qualified trainer if need be, which we can provide if she's placed locally. They should be an experienced dog owner and be willing to accept the challenge of bringing Dianna to what we all know is her true potential -- a sparkling, gem of a dog.

Dianna is located in Huntington, NY. If interested, please email dogs@LAPHuntington.org or call 631-757-9373 and leave a message including your phone number.
