Test Drive a Ford at HHS to Help Stop Cancer

As organizing for this year’s Relay For Life at Huntington High School enters the home stretch, the community can help raise as much as $6,000 to help stop cancer by test driving one of five new vehicles in the school parking lot this Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

Participants must be at least 18 years old and present a valid driver’s license. Ford Corporation will donate $20 to Relay For Life for each person that test drives a car and completes a questionnaire about the vehicle. If 300 people participate in the event, the maximum contribution will be realized and organizers will be sent into delirium.

Last year Danielle Schultz, a member of Huntington High School’s Class of 2013, mailed letters to companies around town asking them to consider sponsoring the Relay For Life, which is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Several businesses responded to Ms. Schultz’s letter with generous donations. Syosset Ford Lincoln of Huntington offered a small donation to the cause, but suggested another idea that would potentially generate a larger check. The idea involved holding a test drive event, but there was not enough time last spring to organize it.

Once Huntington High School students were given the green light to hold the school’s second Relay For Life on May 17-18, Ms. Schultz contacted the dealership and Drive for a Cure came together. Syosset Ford Lincoln of Huntington will erect a tent in the Huntington High School parking lot and showcase five new vehicles for participants to test drive on school property. The 2013 cars include the Fusion, C-Max, Focus, Edge and Explorer.

Participants will be able to select the car of their choice, look it over inside and out and then take it for a spin before completing an easy one page questionnaire about the vehicle.

“Our high school students are working extremely hard to make this year’s Relay event a success and to top their fundraising totals from last year,” Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “The test drive idea is yet another example of their persistence and creative thinking.”

While the donation to Huntington’s Relay For Life is coming from Ford Motor Corporation, the event is being facilitated by the Syosset Ford Lincoln of Huntington dealership, which is located at 333 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington.
