Fall Sports Participation Increases at HHS
The fall season has seen an increase in athletics participation at Huntington High School. There are 336 students participating on 17 varsity and junior varsity squads, 11 more than last year, according to a report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy and sent to Huntington School Board members.
The seven boys’ teams have 173 participants, an increase of 20 over last year’s figure. The 10 girls’ squads are filled with 163 athletes, nine fewer than 2012.
Junior varsity football has the largest roster with 43 players. The varsity football team has 41 players. The two high school boys’ soccer teams have a combined 49 players while the girls’ soccer teams are filled with 38 athletes.

The varsity and junior varsity girls’ tennis teams have a combined 25 players. There are 12 boys’ golf team members. Girls’ swimming has 17 student-athletes participating, including several from the middle school level. The team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School was eliminated four years ago for budgetary reasons.
The high school field hockey program has 44 players on the two teams’ rosters. The girls’ varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams are filled with 19 athletes. The varsity boys’ cross country team has a roster of 11 while the girls’ cross country squad has 20 runners. The varsity boys’ volleyball team has 17 players. (There is no JV boys’ volleyball team this year.)

With a full line-up of teams and crowded rosters, space for practice and competition is tight. Several Blue Devil teams have moved off-site.
