The Huntington High School varsity football, boys’ and girls’ cross country, field hockey, golf, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving, boys’ and girls’ fencing, boys’ and girls’ tennis, boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, crew, girls’ winter track, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, boys’ and girls’ spring track and softball teams all qualified for the New York State Scholar Athlete Award during the 2012/13 school year.

“This means that 23 out of our 26 varsity teams this past year received scholar-athlete status,” said Georgia D. McCarthy, district director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics.

H-ton JV Girls’ Lax Final Report

The Huntington High School junior varsity girls’ lacrosse team compiled a 6-6-1 mark this past spring under head coach Catherine Ruggiero and assistant coach Nicole Bass.

The Blue Devil squad consisted of 15 players. The team was captained by Daniella Schoen, Katie Nugent and Kelly Palladino.

 

Kaplan Leads BCANY Suffolk Team

Huntington High School girls’ basketball coach Michael Kaplan coached the Suffolk team in the Basketball Coaches Association of New York’s Summer Hoops Festival in Johnson City outside of Binghamton. Blue Devil assistant coach Marissa Kaplan was also on the BCANY Suffolk team staff.

The Suffolk squad included Huntington star Heather Forster. Blue Devil guard Katie Nugent was selected as an alternate. The team trained at NorthSport in Northport. In the tournament, Suffolk lost to eventual champion Rochester, 62-59.

Blue Devils Receive Suffolk Gold Keys

A group of 14 talented Huntington athletes was presented with Section XI Gold Key awards at the 45th Blue Devil senior athletic awards banquet in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

The Gold Key is the highest honor a Suffolk athlete can receive for sports participation, according to Huntington Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy. This year’s Blue Devil recipients include Kelly Askerberg, Maggie Askerberg, Thomas Boisclair, Maia Cadle-Hinton, Katia DeSimone, Ryan Dyckes, Kerri-Ann Giambruno, Katie Healy, Shaheem Lewis, John Mallouk, Devon Nelson, Patrick Reilly, Raynisha Witherspoon and Adelia Witt.

“The Gold Key is a county award emphasizing participation in interscholastic athletics while recognizing proficiency in performance,” Ms. McCarthy said. The award is presented in every Suffolk high school to students who have earned a minimum of eight athletic letters on varsity or junior varsity teams between their sophomore and senior years

Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky formally presented the awards to the recipients. “This is a wonderful achievement by these fine young men and women,” Mr. Polansky said.

 

Sheerin in Goal for Rollins College Lax

Huntington High School Class of 2010 member Andrew Sheerin turned in a fine season with the Rollins College lacrosse team, starting 13-of-14 games in goal and stopping 141 shots in nearly 716 minutes of play.

The 5’11, 180 lb. economics major went to Washington College in Maryland out of high school, but did not play lacrosse there. He transferred to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida for his sophomore year and started all 15 games last year, recording 149 saves in goal.

Sheerin played on the Huntington football and lacrosse teams, winning All-Division and MVP honors in the latter as a senior. He also played on an ice hockey team.

 

PJ Beach at Ohio Wesleyan

Huntington High School Class of 2012 member P.J. Beach played in six games as a freshman for the Ohio Wesleyan University lacrosse team. The former Blue Devil had one goal and one assist.

The 6’2, 180 lb. economics major plays attack. Beach was a member of Huntington’s football, winter track and lacrosse teams. Ohio Wesleyan is located in Delaware, Ohio. It has an enrollment of 1,850 students.
