Cultural Arts Workshops for Teachers-Storytelling Connections to the Common Core

Heather Forest is an award winning storyteller, educator and
book author of 17 children’s books and recordings.  Heather performs internationally and works in
professional development for educators. This workshop explores storytelling as
a medium to support the NYS Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and
Literacy.  Utilizing multicultural
folktales, participants will examine a range of creative language arts
activities that can help students to identify details, make inferences,
evaluate facts, predict outcomes, and support conclusions based on story
elements.  Participants will engage in a
writing exercise and will explore how to bring these skills to the classroom
and use existing texts in the teacher’s personal classroom library.
