Cultural Arts Workshops for Teachers-African Abstraction and Modern Art intertwined

Artist Christopher Agostino  is both a visual and performing artist and partner in Agostino Arts with
his wife Lorriane.  He has authored a book based on the StoryFaces and Before Cave Walls  AIE programs and his work has appeared on TV and on magazine covers. Attendees will observe examples of mask and makeup art traditions of
different cultures in Africa.  We will look for evidence of the social function of masks and bodyarts and an examine of how these “primitive” arts influenced the revolutionary approach of Picasso, Matisse and the
other early “modern” artists, both as a source of imagery and as an
inspirational force in their understanding of the power of art to be
socially relevant.  Participants will design a mask and observe Christopher’s face painting technique.
