Schools Closed by Ice Storm

LIRR reduces service to weekend schedule.

and South Huntington school districts canceled classes Wednesday as the ice storm made for hazardous driving conditions.

The is operating on a weekend schedule as the freezing rain and sleet created problems on the tracks. Peak fares are in effect, however. Station waiting rooms will remain open round-the-clock through normal hours on Thursday.

The National Weather Service continued to warn of extremely hazardous driving conditions and said that moderate freezing rain mixed with sleet will continue to make travel dangerous.

The Long Island Power Authority was reporting outages around the area, including up to 50 customers in Huntington Station. Jericho Turnpike between Park Avenue and Dix Hills Road was closed to traffic by downed utility lines.
