New Whitman Poetry Season Starts Today

Saturday marks the start of the 2013 season of Walking With Whitman: Poetry in Performance at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in Huntington Station.

The kick-off reading will be offered by Anne Waldman with Philip Asaph and will begin at 7 p.m. A Meet the Poets reception will be held at 6:15 p.m.

Waldman has been an active member of the "Outrider" experimental poetry community, a culture she has helped create and nurture for more than four decades, as a writer, editor, master teacher, performer,  poetics scholar, infra-structure curator, and cultural/political activist. 

Her poetry is recognized in the lineage of Whitman and Ginsberg, and in the Beat, New York School and Black Mountain trajectories of the New American Poetry.

She is the author of more than 40 books, including the mini-classic Fast Speaking Woman, a collection of essays entitled Vow to Poetry and several selected poems editions including Helping the Dreamer, Kill or Cure and In the Room of Never Grieve.

Known as "Philip" by his friends and family, Raymond Philip Asaph has published poems and stories in Poetry, Glimmer and Mississippi Review. 

He studied poetry and fiction at Eckerd College, Bucknell University and SUNY Stony Brook before winning a fellowship to New York University and receiving his MFA.  Philip has been teaching poetry, fiction and philosophy for twenty years and is now completing a novel-in-stories, Brothers of the Ox.
