Supervisor Frank P. Petrone declared a snow emergency at noon Tuesday. Town Hall will close at 3 p.m. and  not open until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The MTA urges customers to leave work early Tuesday and finish traveling early Tuesday night, especially those who use Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road.  LIRR station waiting rooms will remain open around-the-clock now through Friday afternoon, to accommodate customers waiting for trains during cold and inclement weather.

The Huntington school district is releasing the buses for dismissal from the high school and middle school approximately 30 minutes earlier to account for anticipated slow travel time. Children from all schools may therefore arrive home several minutes earlier than expected, again dependent on road conditions and travel time.

The South Huntington district canceled all after-school activities except the YMCA program.

The town provided the following information:

Petrone also opened the Town’s Emergency Operations Center at noon to help coordinate communications among Town departments and fire and rescue services. Representatives from several Town departments with key emergency responsibilities were told to report to the center, in the town's general services facility on Pulaski Road in Huntington Station.

All activities at town facilities are canceled for Tuesday. Check the town website for status updates on Wednesday programs.

All refuse collection is canceled for Wednesday. Evening curbside pickup for commercial businesses in Huntington Village and Huntington Station is canceled for Tuesday.

HART Bus paratransit is canceled for Wednesday. Regular service is operating on snow routes.

Maybe a little less Common Core and a bit more Common Sense should be used by school superintendents. They know full well there is going to be a late morning snowstorm. Just how much teaching by nervous teachers is being done? Just how much learning are excited students absorbing? Close school next time and they can use their "Children First" schpeel. Do not hand me that school aid excuse because that just shows children really aren't first.
