Huntington Station Man Seriously Hurt in Crash, Charged With DWI

A 19-year-old Huntington Station man is in the hospital with serious injuries following a single-car crash on Melville Road early Thursday morning, police said. 

Shane McAdams was driving a 2000 Ford Mustang south on Melville Road in South Huntington when he apparently lost control of the vehicle, which crossed over the northbound lane and overturned onto the lawn of a residence at 12:17 a.m., police said. McAdams was charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned at a later date.

New Elementary School Boundaries Approved

The Half Hollow Hills Board of Education unanimously approved new boundaries for its elementary schools Monday night, an outgrowth of its decision in October to close two schools because of declining enrollment.

School superintendent Kelly Fallon said changes in the final plan, known as Map 4, will achieve a better balance in diversifying and equalizing the population of students in each of the five schools.

Hauppauge Senior Named Siemens Semifinalist

Hauppauge High School senior Allison Lee, was recently named a semifinalist in the 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

Lee’s project title was “Mechanical Destruction of Bacteria using Graphene, Graphene Oxide, as well as Phase Separated Polymer Blends.” The project demonstrated that bacteria cells can be targeted and mechanically broken down in order to kill bacteria without the use of antibiotics or other drugs.

Northport Bans Bamboo

Homeowners in Northport Village will no longer feel bamboozled by potentially invasive plants that encroach on their properties due to a new local law, prohibiting the further growing of bamboo.

Northport Village trustees passed a bamboo control and prohibition law Tuesday night, which aims to protect private and Village property from the damaging spread of certain bamboo grasses and to protect indigenous plant materials from the spread of running bamboo.

Nisen 347 Opens Near Smith Haven Mall

Sushi lovers can enjoy two stories of sushi in the Smithtown area on Thursday night with the opening of Nisen 347, located at the intersection of Middle Country Road and Route 347.

Owner Tom Lam said Nisen 347 will open its doors at 5 p.m. on Thursday to serve dinner. Reservations can be made for those eager to dine at the contemporary sushi restaurant, while the bar and lounge are open only to walk-in customers.

Kings Park Board of Education's latest efforts to resolve ethical questions raised by a community fundraiser for trustee Liz Barrett dissolved into a yelling contest in front of students and parents on Tuesday night.

"Enough. This is had gone on far too long. Our students do not deserve this embarrassment," said Marie Goldstein, president of Kings Park Board of Education.

Shell Casing Found at Commack Middle School

Security was on high alert Wednesday at Commack Middle School after a student found an empty ammunition shell casing in the building's hallway that morning.

District officials said that they are continuing to work with police to keep students and staff safe.
