H-ton Freshman Receives Ballet Scholarship

Huntington High School freshman Alexandra Smith’s long hours of training and performing are increasingly paying dividends. The teenager was recently awarded a national training scholarship by American Ballet Theatre.

Attaining the scholarship is a noteworthy achievement. Of the 1,100 students who attended American Ballet Theatre’s nationwide summer intensive programs earlier this year only 10 young dancers were selected by the nominating committee to receive a national training scholarship.

Ms. Smith’s award includes a full scholarship to the 2014 ABT summer intensive program in New York, as well as $3,000 to put towards housing during the program and her year-round training expenses.

Lupinacci Helps Cut Ribbon at Walt Whitman Shops

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,WF,I-Huntington Station) helped celebrate the grand reopening of the Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington Station. The mall has undergone extensive revitalization efforts including the addition of several high-end retailers such as SONY, Brooks Brothers, J.Jill and Saks Fifth Avenue.

New Statin Guidelines

A recent list of recommendations from the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology discusses the idea of a broader application of statin medications, which help lower cholesterol.

Both organizations say this change in statin guidelines can help more people and that doctors shouldn’t simply prescribe the medications based on a certain cholesterol number. The guidelines help physicians do what many of us have already been doing when it comes to broadening the appropriate use of statins.

Just because your child is learning to read, or is an independent reader, doesn’t mean that the benefits of regularly reading aloud to him or her have ended; in fact, it can help build vocabulary, improve reading skills, and foster a sense of closeness between you and your child. This is a time for children to continue to gain confidence in their skills.
