Do you like to be scared? Are you a fan of movies that are dark, weird, fun and cool? Then the Summercamp Cinema Classic Camp and Horror Film Festival at the Cinema Arts Centre (CAC) may just be the perfect in-town getaway for you.
The series, which begins May 7 and runs through August, features a double feature of the top film picks in the horror and camp movie genres. Some of the choices include Kill Bill versions 1 and 2, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 version), Frankenstein, Machete, Cape Fear (1962 version), Bull Durham and Slap Shot.
If music is more your style, the CAC is a good venue for that as well. Since music has been the backdrop and the feature in films since the 1930's, it seems it was a natural progression for the CAC to incorporate live music into the lineup.

“We have always had music events here on an irregular basis,” said Dylan Skolnick, co-director of the CAC. “Now we're just doing more, and the response has been great. We're also pleased to be working with other local organizations like the Folk Music Society of Huntington. It's all part of our mission of bringing great art to our town.”
The CAC has several music programs on tap for May. Renowned pianist Byron Janis will play songs from his musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame” on May 5, the Beatles “White Album” will be discussed on May 11, David Bowie's career is the subject of Rock Legends Live on May 17 and the Folk Music Society's Hard Luck Cafe will feature blues singer Danielle Miraglia and trio Rough Folk on May 19.

Over at the Heckscher Museum, music is the heart of its First Friday Concert series. May features guitarists from Five Towns College playing jazz and classical pieces. June's performers, Old School, does their take on songs from the '60s and '70s including selections from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The museum's exhibits are open for view during the concerts, bringing the experiences of both arts to a whole new level.
If you know a mother who loves art, make her day a little more special this year by taking her to a place where it is celebrated. The CAC will host a concert by Cartman Moore and the Skymusic Ensemble, while over at the Walt Whitman Birthplace the poet's birthday will be celebrated on Mother's Day.
There is also free admission to the Heckscher Museum for all mothers and grandmothers that day, which coincides with the start of two new exhibits: Edward Weston's photography and Artists of the Stieglitz Circle featuring the works of Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Steichen and Oscar Bluemner. This exhibit will also feature the Museum's newest acquisition by John Marin entitled “Huntington, Long Island, No. 1” and works by two Huntington residents, Helen Torr and Arthur Dove.
