Huntington Candidate: Bari Fehrs

Patch asked candidates for the Huntington and South Huntington school boards to identify the most important issue facing the district.

Bari Fehrs, a candidate for the Huntington board, gave this response:

One of the primary challenges that our school district, as well as most others face, is to maintain quality academic programs and services in the face of a state mandated tax levy limit.  We are engaged in a multitude of district initiatives and must meet a range of newly implemented state requirements that require a great deal of financial and human resources.  It is a difficult burden that tax payers have to carry and it is vital to be thoughtful in the budget process.  I feel like we are putting forth a very fiscal and educationally sound budget for the 2013/2014 school year but I will continue to advocate at the local and state levels in an effort to ensure that the Huntington School District receives its fair share of state aid.  We must maintain our ability to provide our students with a full complement of educational opportunities while remaining sensitive to the concerns of the district taxpayers.  My involvement with the district over the past 10 years has given me a strong foundation to be a strong asset to the school board
