Victim of Fatal Hit-and-Run Identified

Police say man was killed on New York Avenue by driver who left the scene.

The man struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident over the weekend was identified Monday as a Huntington Station resident.

Suffolk County police said the victim was Reinaldo Velasquez-Yanes, 25.  He  was struck about 3 a.m. by a vehicle southbound on New York Avenue. 

Police said the vehicle involved in the crash just north of the East 12th Street intersection was a silver or gray Mercury Grand Marquis, with a model year between 1998 and 2002. The vehicle sustained damage to the front end and grill.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

The accident was one of two hit-and-run accidents Sunday in Huntington. The second occurred about  9:30 p.m. on East Jericho Turnpike, and left a man seriously injured.
