Huntington Station Mom Charged with DWI with 3 Kids in Car

A woman drove while intoxicated, crashed into a telephone pole in Huntington Station Saturday with her three children in her car, and then fled with them on foot, authorities said.

Suffolk County Police arrested Sarah Knakal, 30, 22 Cooper Ave. in Huntington Station. She was driving west on E. Jericho Turnpike at approximately 6 p.m. when she struck a telephone pole in front of 967 E. Jericho Turnpike, and then struck a sign.

Knakal left the scene with her three children – ages 5, 7 and 9. Police found Knakal at E. Jericho Turnpike and Cooper Avenue nearly 10 minutes later.

There were no injuries.

The children were turned over to a family member, and Suffolk County Child Protective Services were notified, police said.

Knakal was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child 15 years old or younger (Leandra’s Law), leaving the scene of an incident and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

She is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
