Fire Rips Through Tilden Brakes

Blaze injures man who was working in the shop.

Updated: One man was injured Friday afternoon when a fire ripped through the Tilden Brakes shop on New York Avenue.

The Huntington Manor Fire Department fought the fire, which was reported about 2:45 p.m.

Shop owner Joe Montefusco said that a mechanic was burned on his arm, and the Huntington Community First Aid Squad said it had taken a 45-year-old man to Huntington Hospital for treatment of second-degree burns.

Montefusco said the fire apparently was touched off by a lightbulb that broke and ignited some fuel.

Huntington Manor first assistant chief Frank McQuade said that the building's roof and side were destroyed. When firefighters attempted to climb onto the roof "they got off the roof right away," McQuade said. Fire chief Fred Steenson Jr. was in charge of the scene. The department had about 45 firefighters, while Huntington and Greenlawn departments each sent several men.

The squad also treated three firefighters at the scene for heat related issues.

The shop is at 800 New York Ave., directly across from the Big H shopping center.
