Triumph Opens First Shop in U.S. at Whitman Mall

Lingerie store at Whitman Shops offers specialized fitting services.

Several things are worth mentioning when it comes to shopping for lingerie: cost, style and, many women say, the most important: fit.

Triumph, which turned to Walt Whitman Shops for its first-ever store in the United States, specializes in helping customers find the right item with “tailoresses” who ensure the right fit.

“Having been in the business for 127 years, the store knows a lot about fit,” said Merve Liebelt, vice president of communications for the European company. “A lot of women do wear the wrong size or fit, so we urge women to wear the right bra size.

The store itself is just the right size, too, she said, at just under 800 square feet, which allows for four larger-than-normal fitting rooms.

The fitting service is free and optional; bras start at $38 and go considerably higher.

“From our point of view, we focus on fitting but you can buy without fitting,” she said. “It’s more than just the size; what you need to know involves size, shapes, what kind of silhouettes. The tailoresses “offer a lot of guidance and service.”

The store also sells shapewear, which she said gets away from the dull or limited items usually available, and other items. She said the demographic for the store is women in their 20s and on up.

“The Long Island demographic is probably a bit more affluent” than those in other regions, she said. “ They buy lingerie; they don’t just buy for a couple of days. They are quite savvy about what they want.”
