Piece of the Rock: School Board Accepts Land Gift

Donation of .17-acre piece of property where Huntington High School rock rests approved by School Board.

The Huntington School Board last month approved the transfer of ownership of property where the rock currently sits.

Presented as a gift by Roger Tilles of the Tilles Investment Co., the .17-acre piece of property, valued at $2,841, is located at the school's north driveway and Holdsworth Drive adjacent to an abandoned house, according to School Superintendent Jim Polansky, who recommended approval of the gift at a Jan. 30 School Board meeting.

"Many people think that it belongs to us as it is," said Polansky. "It just makes it easier for us to do what we need to do if we owned that property."

Polansky recommended a resolution be put on the Feb. 13 meeting agenda regarding acceptance of the land. School Board members agreed to go ahead with a vote Jan. 30.

"What would be the downside of not accepting it?" asked Board Trustee Elizabeth Black.

Unanimously, the School Board approved the resolution at Jack Abrams School last month.

Title search and title insurance will be secured through district council at a cost not to exceed $500, according to Polansky.

Tilles, of Woodbury, was re-elected to a second five-year term as a New York State Education Department Regents member for the Tenth Judicial District in 2010.

The School Board meets tonight at at 7:30 p.m. Agenda
