- Bio: Henry Powderly is a regional editor at Patch covering northern Suffolk County out to the East End. Henry began his career in journalism in the Hudson Valley of New York, where he worked for community weeklies in Kingston, Saugerties, Woodstock and New Paltz. After graduating from SUNY New Paltz with a bachelor's degree in English/Writing, Henry moved to Long Island. He spent the next five years covering business, government, arts, energy and wine as Web Editor for Long Island Business News, running its news- and blog-driven website, and creating all of its multimedia content. In a prior life, Henry studied jazz saxophone in New York City, and continued to play professionally throughout the Hudson Valley when he lived there. Today, when he's not plugged into his MacBook, he's either writing, listening to avant-garde jazz that makes his wife's skin itch, taking photos, reading Henry Miller or wandering through Long Island wine country. He also has a beautiful baby daughter, two Boston Terriers and no fashion sense.
Your Beliefs
At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable.
This disclosure is not a license for our editors to inject these beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that our beliefs are on the record will force us to be ever mindful to write, report and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you, the user, ever see evidence that we failed in this mission, please let us know.
Politics
- How would you describe your political beliefs? Liberal.
- Are you registered with a certain party? Democratic.
Religion
- How religious would you consider yourself? Spiritual. Fledgling Buddhist.
Local Hot-Button Issues
- What do you think are the most important issues facing the community? High cost of living, unruly taxes, unchecked sprawl, open space preservation, downtown revitalization and brain drain.
- Where do you stand on each of these issues? We must do all we can to stop the exodus of young people from Long Island. If we don't, the communities we're doing our best to celebrate all have expiration dates.
