Townwide Fund Names New Executive Director

Mary Timmons rejoins organization after working in Florida.

Mary Timmons has been named executive director of the Townwide Fund of Huntington. “We are very glad that Mary is back on our team and look forward to working together to continue to grow and develop the Townwide Fund,” said Townwide Fund President James T. Powers in a press release Monday. The executive director position has been vacant at the Townwide Fund for about four years, according to Townwide Fund representatives. Timmons, the associate director of the organization from 2010-11, returns to Huntington from Florida, where she worked as marketing manager for Pauli of Vienna, a skin care products distributer. Huntington Helpers: Bea Hartigan Steps Up

Swim official, Townwide Fund volunteer and Red Cross first aid trainer are among the hats she wears.

Chances are, if you’ve taken a first aid or CPR course in Huntington, or a water safety or lifesaving course through the Red Cross, you’ve seen or met Bea Hartigan. If you’re a runner who has burned off a little pre-Thanksgiving guilt or St. Patrick’s cheer, you’ve seen her handiwork in the road races sponsored by the Townwide Fund of Huntington. Ditto if you’ve participated in swim meets throughout the region. Hartigan is active as an official with Metropolitan Swimming, the local chapter of USA Swimming. In 2008, she was inducted into the Metropolitan Swimming Hall of Fame, recognized for her years of work as a coach and administrator. Gil Smith, longtime Huntington High School and Y swim coach, introduced her that evening and works with…

Huntington Helps its Own

Residents wanting to share with others during the holiday have plenty of opportunities.

The holiday season has always been a time when people find themselves searching for meaningful ways to connect with their families, friends and communities. Raising money or donating toys are rewarding ways to balance the excess that this time of year can sometimes represent. With so many of our neighbors suffering through this difficult economy, you don't have to look far for a place that can use your help. Councilwoman Glenda Jackson has initiated a food drive to help relieve some of the burdens that affect so many families who are in need. Non-perishable food items and toiletries can be donated in the main lobby of Town Hall through January 30. Donations will be distributed to food pantries within Huntington which are all operating …

A Gala Event for a Good Cause

The Townwide Fund of Huntington will host its 2nd Annual Holiday Fundraising Event at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport tomorrow night.

The Townwide Fund of Huntington will hold one of its biggest fundraisers of the year tomorrow night at a special opening-night performance of "The Sound of Music" at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport. Last year, in an attempt to come up with an event that was not another golf outing, Townwide Fund president, Jim Powers approached the John W. Engeman Theater with the idea of holding a gala, red-carpet fundraising event. Barbara Axmacher, group/community relations director at the theater, had worked with other non-profits by offering a block of discounted tickets to a show, which would then be resold at full value with the proceeds going to the organization. The Townwide Fund took it a step further by planning a full out gala …

A 'Feel Good' Approach to Business

Aromatherapy Essentials offers yoga classes to benefit HorseAbility - a therapeutic riding program for special needs children and adults.

One of the many great things about Huntington is the involvement of so many of our local businesses in the community. If you go to any fundraiser around town, you will see restaurants donating food (and sometimes even their staff), and local merchants providing merchandise and gift certificates for raffle baskets prepared by everyone from the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition to the Junior Welfare League, Townwide Fund of Huntington, and just about every other local non-profit who ever asks for their help. If you're not convinced by any of the other long list of reasons to shop local, this alone should be a deciding factor. Aromatherapy Essentials on Main Street has found its own unique way to involve themselves in an organization …
