Whitman Seniors Awarded 368 Scholarships at Ceremony

Teachers and administrators also honored for excellence last week.

Scholarships were presented to 368 graduating Whitman High School seniors at an awards ceremony June 14. Also at the event, held as part of a South Huntington school board meeting, dozens of teachers and administrators were also recognized for their efforts with the school district.  Retiring Whitman High School assistant principle Steven Ramsey helped introduce some of the students receiving awards. "I can't think of a better class to go out with, we've had some great relationships," said Ramsey, who read of some of the names. "The next four years is going to an amazing time in your lifetime." Academic, Athletic Scholarships Available

Assemblyman Jim Conte's office has applications available for 2 scholarships valued at $1,500 each.

Assemblyman Jim Conte (R,I,C,WF-Huntington Station) is accepting applications in his district office for the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators scholarships. The conference will award four $1,500 scholarships (two academic and two athletic) to student applicants from around the state. Eligible applicants can be high school students planning to attend college in the fall, current undergraduate students, or graduate students. For the academic scholarship, eligible students must have a grade point average of 85 or above, be active in community service and extracurricular activities, have good conduct and demonstrate the dedication to pursue and complete a degree, and demonstrate financial need. Whitman Clothing Drive Benefits Community

Fourth annual “Clothing Drive for Scholarships” collects clothes from community to benefit the needy, as well as provide scholarships for Walt Whitman seniors.

Members of the South Huntington PTA council, Whitman high school students, and Huntington residents came out Saturday morning for the fourth annual Clothing Drive For Scholarships at Whitman High School. The drive collects any article of clothing, which is sorted and shipped off to developing countries and those in need. The PTA is then paid 13 cents for every pound of clothing they send off, with all proceeds used to fund scholarships for Walt Whitman seniors. "In the past week we've accumulated 15,000 pounds of clothes," said Jayne O'Toole, who is in her second year running the drive. "We've been very lucky and fortunate." Kickball Fundraiser to Honor Huntington HS Alum

Tournament will be held Saturday to raise funds for scholarship in memory of Billy Oliva.

The second of two alumni kickball tournaments will be held at Huntington High School on Saturday afternoon to help raise funds for "Let It Begin With Me – William F. Oliva Memorial Scholarship." The scholarship was created in February by the Class of 1984 alunmi to honor their classmate Billy Oliva, who was killed in a work-related accident on Oct. 14, 2004. Acording to Rose Pelle Kitzmiller, the organizer of the scholarship and Saturday's festivities, each tournament serves to both raise money for a newly-created scholarship for Huntington High School seniors, and to honor the memory of the Class of 1984 alum.
