100 Things to Do in Huntington

No. 75: Joseph Lloyd Manor House

A Colonial-era house on Lloyd Neck offers glimpses into past way of life.

Lloyd Manor sits partway up a hill overlooking Lloyd Harbor, the epitome of an old-time manor house. Inside, the rooms are filled with items and furniture appropriate to 1793, based on an inventory by then-owner Joseph Lloyd II. Local schoolchildren know the house from school tours where they learned about Colonial childhood around the time of the Revolution. When it functioned as a rental before it was donated to the Society for the Preservation of Long Island in 1968, it once was home to Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh (February 1940-August 1941). There’s a photo on display showing Lindbergh looking into a garden pond, flanked by two of his sons. Local residents also know the manor as the home of Jupiter Hammon, the first published …

100 Things to Do in Huntington

No. 90: Target Rock Wildlife Refuge

The 80-acre preserve on Lloyd Neck is one of 9 wildlife refuges on Long Island that protect migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway.

The 80-acre preserve at the tip of Lloyd’s Neck offers an easy walk to the beach on wide paths, although the uphill climb on the way back to the parking lot may leave you huffing a bit. It is mostly hardwood, upland forest, with a half-mile of bay beach. Gardner’s Path is a wide, gentle walk past the former vegetable and cutting garden of Ferdinand and Mary Eberstadt, the family that donated the land…

A New View - Lloyd Family Series (The Joseph Lloyd Manor)

An artistic and photographic perspective of Huntington.

Part of the Lloyd family land, the Manor house was built in 1766 by Joseph Lloyd after his father Henry passed away.  Overlooking the harbor, the Manor sits on 2 acres of land and shows off its federal style architecture beautifully.  It's symmetry and clean design is the result of the timber framed technique which is done by jointing heavy timbers by use of mortise and tenon. This joint technique has been used by woodworkers for thousands of years and became familiar to stonemasons and blacksmiths soon after.   The original gable roof is clearly defined and spread among the top windows as well.  This style and shape was often found in gothic architecture and was a big part of 18th century design.  During the 19th century some adjustments …
