More Than 300 Prom Dress Collected in Huntington For Charity

Donations to be distributed to Long Island residents in need this prom season.

Through the help of Huntington volunteers and generous donors, prom season will be a litle easier on the wallet for some Long Island girls and their families this prom season. Organizers are reporting a good turnout at two donation spots in Huntington on Sunday. The Huntington YMCA collected 60 prom dresses for their 18th annual Prom Boutique sponsored by the Long Island Volunteer Center Sunday. St. Anthony's High School, Villanova Alumni Association in South Huntington received 260 prom dresses. The prom accessory collections will be donated for free to families who cannot easily absorb the expense of a new gown for their prom, awards ceremony or graduation event, according to event organizers. High school guidance counselors, at-risk …

Kindergarten Enrichment Program Scaled Back

Additional classrooms at Temple Beth El will not be utilized after need failed to materialize.

A joint effort to offer half-day kindergarten classes for Huntington students has been scaled back due to small enrollment numbers. After the Huntington School Board reduced its kindergarten schedule last year, classes were offered at Temple Beth El through both the YMCA and the Family Service League and scheduled to run according to the school district's 2011-2012 calendar. But due to a lack of participation, the Temple Beth El building will not be utilized this year. “It may happen next year,” said Temple Beth El President Michael Heiberger, in a statement last week. The Huntington YMCA announced in June that it would offer four half-day kindergarten classes at Temple Beth El beginning this fall for up to 120 students. Eileen Knauer, …

YMCA Wraps Up Lazyman Triathlon

Joy Frohlich and Kate Kane discuss how their fitness levels have improved thanks to the Lazyman Triathlon.

For the past month, 120 contestants have competed in the Huntington YMCA’s Lazyman Triathlon. As the event ended on March 20, our two contestants, Kate Kane and Joy Frohlich, reflect on how they have improved their fitness. For anyone who has always wanted to do an Ironman Triathlon but found the intense training program intimidating, the YMCA’s Lazyman has created an Ironman that is accessible to everyone. Participants have one month to complete the entire distance of what an Ironman triathlete does in one day: a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run. In addition, Lazyman participants can make modifications to the program, depending on their fitness level. Instead of swimming, contestants can also water walk. They can use any …

Huntington Gets Fit During Lazyman Triathlon

120 get moving during the YMCA's month-long modified triathlon.

While the prospect of doing an Ironman Triathlon is undoubtedly daunting and typically limited to the most conditioned of athletes, Huntington’s YMCA is running an event that allows everyone to be an Ironman: the Lazyman Triathlon. Participants have until March 20 to complete the entire distance of an Ironman: a 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2 mile run. They keep track of their progress by logging in their workouts at the YMCA’s front desk. In addition, contestants are allowed to make modifications to their Lazyman training routine. Instead of just swimming, they can also water walk. They are allowed to use any type of bike in the gym, bike on the road or take a spin class. In addition, they can complete the run portion by either …

Huntington Helpers: Bea Hartigan Steps Up

Swim official, Townwide Fund volunteer and Red Cross first aid trainer are among the hats she wears.

Chances are, if you’ve taken a first aid or CPR course in Huntington, or a water safety or lifesaving course through the Red Cross, you’ve seen or met Bea Hartigan. If you’re a runner who has burned off a little pre-Thanksgiving guilt or St. Patrick’s cheer, you’ve seen her handiwork in the road races sponsored by the Townwide Fund of Huntington. Ditto if you’ve participated in swim meets throughout the region. Hartigan is active as an official with Metropolitan Swimming, the local chapter of USA Swimming. In 2008, she was inducted into the Metropolitan Swimming Hall of Fame, recognized for her years of work as a coach and administrator. Gil Smith, longtime Huntington High School and Y swim coach, introduced her that evening and works with…
