Budget Passes in Huntington; Rogan, Palacios and DiGiacomo Win

Capital improvements plan approved overwhelmingly by voters Tuesday.

Voters elected incumbent Emily Rogan, Xavier Palacios and Tom DiGiacomo to the Huntingon school board Tuesday. Also voted in was the $112 million budget. The budget passed by 71 percent, 2,005-803, and the $2.29 million capital improvements plan was also approved 1,989-645.  With rain falling for much of the afternoon and controversial items like the closing of Jack Abrams School off the table for now, vote totals were down from last year. More than 3,400 votes were cast in the 2011 budget vote, well off this year's count of about 2,800 budget votes. Rogan said she was surprised and happy about her large vote total in one of the "nicest" campaigns she has ever participated in. She said the new board members should fit in well. "I think Tom…

Election Day Events at Huntington High School Planned

Fashion show, food drive and art show set.

With several events planned for May 15 at Huntington High School, those casting a vote in the school district election are encouraged to spend a little time outside of the ballot box to take it all in. Tuesday's list of activities at the school includes student fashion shows at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and a student art show on display from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. At a school board meeting this week, trustee Adam Spector advised voters not to cast a vote and leave right away. "Spend at least an hour milling around in the gym and looking at your own child's work, your neighbor's work, people you've never heard of's work," said Spector. "And the fashion show too, it's really a great thing." Non-perishable food donations will be accepted at the school …

Huntington Senior Named Intel Semifinalist

Huntington senior Juli Coraor named an Intel Science semifinalist three months after being honored by Siemens.

Some moments just seem destined. That was the case Wednesday when Huntington High School senior Juli Coraor was named an Intel Science Talent Search semifinalist.  There’s booksmart and then there’s a genetic expectation of brilliance. No doubt Coraor is both studious and genetically gifted. After all, her mother is a professor at Stony Brook University and older brother was also an Intel semifinalist. Coraor was one of 300 students nationwide chosen from among 1,839 entrants with her research paper, “The Impact of Compressive Misfit Strain on Improper Ferroelectricity in Lead Titanate/Strontium Titanate Superlattices.” Coraor took freshman honors physics at Stony Brook University as a high school junior. She was a Simons Summer Research …

Huntington Student Named Finalist in Science Contest

Senior Holly Flores to head to regional competition.

Bones will be bones — except when the extracellular matrix of cells control size, shape and composition. The concept is Huntington High School senior Holly Flores' focus in her project titled "A Study of the Extracellular Matrix in Dental Pulp Stem Cell Differentiation with and without Static Magnetic Fields." Flores was recently named one of 96 regional finalists in the Siemens Foundation Competition for her work, which entailed engineering bones and manipulating the external environment of the extracellular matrix. 2,436 students registered for the competition and 2,541 submitted projects. "I am so honored to be chosen as a regional finalist," said Flores.  "Long Island and throughout New York are home to one of the biggest research …

Kiwanis to Rethink Race Planning for Next Year

Some residents cite lack of info about fundraiser, overlap with homecoming.

The Huntington Kiwanis Club will be examining how it handles future races after complaints that Saturday’s fundraising 10k run surprised and inconvenienced many Huntington residents. Barry Turk, past president of the club, said two factors, a minor car accident that delayed the start of the race, and the discovery that the original course was a little short of official race requirements, added some confusion to the day’s otherwise-successful event. Numerous people complained that they were trapped in their neighborhoods without sufficient warning as the race wound across several major roads leading into and out of Huntington village.  Others cited the timing and course of the race that preceded the start of Huntington High School’s …
