This week's stop: House of Charm, which will soon be closing as the owners of the Huntington store are moving to Florida.
There is good news and bad news about House of Charm. The good news is that the Huntington Station antique store have an unbelievable selection of French antiques amongst their vast array of inventory. The bad news is that after over 30 years as one of Huntington's most cherished antique shops, they are closing their doors at the end of June. The family that owns the store is relocating to Florida. Friends of Holiday House gathered Saturday night to celebrate the camp's 96th season with a kick off night of barbecue, music and dancing as a crowd of around 200 gathered under tents on the grounds of a summer camp that is tucked away on the outskirts of Huntington. Pink, yellow, purple, red and blue screened wooden cabins full of bunk beds line one side of the property. A large lawn, playground equipment, a pool, a large screened gazebo where campers can play in rainy weather, and a campfire area fill the rest of the grounds. Facing the road is a large building that was remodeled several years ago and is home to offices, the kitchen and dining area, the thrift shop and computer labs. The Holiday House provides a summer-camp experience to 200 underprivileged girls each summer.
The North Shore Holiday House, a summer camp for underprivileged girls, is tucked quietly away on a residential street just north of the village. Since it was formed in 1914 by a group of Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor women, local community members have financially supported Holiday House, providing summer camp completely free of charge to the approximately 200 girls, aged seven to 11 and all from Long Island, who attend each summer. Funds come from donations, fundraisers and the thrift shop in the lower level run completely by volunteers and proceeds go directly to running the camp each summer.
