Arts scene happenings in Huntington.
With the summer season now in full swing, things continue to heat up at the Cinema Arts Centre. This week’s Summer Camp Cinema features Long Island’s own Unconventional Conventionalists performing the cult favorite, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show." If you have always wanted the chance to shout out the movie’s dialogue or wear a newspaper over your head while shooting water out of a squirt bottle, this is your chance. The performance begins at 11:30 p.m. on July 9. On July 17, the CAC pays tribute to co-founder Vic Skolnick, who died last June at the age of 81. The cinema will show his favorite movie, “Cherry Blossoms” after a ceremony in the garden where a plaque will be placed in Skolnick’s honor. The CAC has not forgotten about the …

From breakfast with grandparents to steaks on the grill to sleeping in, here's hoping dads get to enjoy their special day.
Grills will fire up all over Long Island today as dads celebrate an annual summer rite of barbecuing on Father’s Day. “Steaks,” is what he’s grilling, said Bob of Huntington, who didn’t want to give his last name as he picked up a pizza on Saturday at Little Vincent’s with his kids Matt, 5, and Gigi, 10, in tow. When asked if he was doing the grilling, he said, “Who else is going to cook besides dad?” His family has no definite plans for the afternoon after spending the morning with his parents, said Anthony Ciafardoni of Huntington, who was shopping downtown with his family. “Maybe a bike ride with the kids in the afternoon,” said his wife, Dena. Father’s Day, marked on the third weekend in June, celebrates fathers and their influence on …

Give yourself a Mother’s Day gift: a break
It seems like once you become a mother, there’s always something to feel guilty about. No matter how much love, attention and mind-numbing decision-making we put into our parenting, at some point we all feel that we could have loved more, paid more attention and made better decisions. And it seems like once the guilt factor has been allowed to brew, it overflows beyond our kids to encompass how we interact with our partners, family members, friends and co-workers. Somehow we find ourselves frequently living by the “should,” “have-to,” “supposed-to” rules: meaning that whatever we’re doing now, we really ought to be doing something else. But did you know that all this guilt can actually be harmful to your health? Christel Nani, R.N., author…

What's Happening In The Arts Scene Around Huntington.
Do you like to be scared? Are you a fan of movies that are dark, weird, fun and cool? Then the Summercamp Cinema Classic Camp and Horror Film Festival at the Cinema Arts Centre (CAC) may just be the perfect in-town getaway for you. The series, which begins May 7 and runs through August, features a double feature of the top film picks in the horror and camp movie genres. Some of the choices include Kill Bill versions 1 and 2, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 version), Frankenstein, Machete, Cape Fear (1962 version), Bull Durham and Slap Shot. If music is more your style, the CAC is a good venue for that as well. Since music has been the backdrop and the feature in films since the 1930's, it seems it was a …

From tulips to live performances to tennis, this park in Huntington village offers something for just about everyone.
Business was booming on a recent sunny Sunday in Heckscher Park. From passive recreation to spinning dizziness on the playground, the park surrounding the Heckscher Museum of Art along Main and Prime streets in Huntington was host to families, seniors, children in strollers, jugglers and the usual denizens of squirrels, ducks, geese and swans. Right now the park is putting its spring foot forward as it prepares for the 11th annual Tulip Festival, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. A full day of activities is planned, rain or shine, around a backdrop of 20,000 tulips. Ashley, 10, and Robbie, 11, tossed a lacrosse ball in the park with their dad, Mike McSweeney of West Islip, before sitting down to Easter dinner at grandma …

Juried art show and exhibition features high school students.
Not only was the weather beautiful and stunning on Saturday, but so was the art work on display at the opening reception and awards ceremony for the exhibition, Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum 2011. The Heckscher Museum of Art is celebrating its 15th year of representing the talents of high school students with a juried art show. “This show is the culmination of a whole program run by the museum," Kristina Seekamp, associate director of education, said. “The students created their own art in response to their interpretation of artwork in the museum’s collections and the special exhibitions.” The School Discovery program encourages students to convey these works of art into their own vision by analysis, discussion…

What's happening in the arts scene around town
Huntington's arts scene is interactive for and with artists of all ages year round, but the spring seems to hold even more opportunities, especially to children and teenagers. In recognition of April being National Poetry Month, the Walt Whitman Birthplace invites children ages 8 and up to celebrate this form of art, specifically Walt Whitman's reflective “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd” on April 16 by crafting a decoration to hang near the lilac bush adjacent to the front door of the poet's childhood home. This event will be under the direction of art instructor and poet Anne Kingsbury. The Birthplace is also hosting Teenspeak Inc.'s exhibit, “Generations” beginning April 20. In May, students from Walt Whitman High School will …
