Huntington Goes Green

Town expo, garden clean-up launch environmental events

A garden clean-up and a family expo kicked off Earth Day events this weekend. The town's Touch-a-Truck, Family Earth Day Expo went on Saturday despite cold, windy weather. Youngsters explored trucks while adults dropped off electronic items for recycling, papers for shredding or explored environmental products. On Sunday, a handful of volunteers removed litter and planted flowers along the edges of the community garden on New York Avenue. Others tended their plants in raised beds in the garden, which opened last year. Huntington Patch will be reporting on various environmental events throughout the week leading up to Earth Day on Friday.

So feel free to join the conversation today as we discuss: Go Green: Raising Children to be Stewards of the Environment It’s almost Earth Day! This international holiday, which dates back to 1970, occurs annually on April 22. This year it happens to fall right smack in the middle of Spring break for Huntington area schools. If you will be sticking close to home during vacation, there are lots of ways to celebrate this holiday locally and encourage your children to think about things we can all do to help preserve our planet. Hopefully many of you …

We try to make sure we always do the little things to live a green lifestyle since we know they really do add up to make a huge difference and will help our little ones develop green habits. One great example of this is with our son's lunch. We always pack waste free lunches for him and now his daycare has caught on and is promoting waste free lunches throughout the entire center which is huge! …   more ›

So What If It's a Crazy-Investment World?

Instead of running for the hills, investors need to get back to basics.

Check the financial headlines lately? The markets dropped over 9 percent in one day. Greece is on the brink of default. The Euro is crashing against, of all currencies, the US dollar. Goldman Sachs, the prodigal son of Wall Street sued by the SEC and with worse poll numbers than British Petroleum. Investors, still reeling from the Wall Street collapse in 2008 have to be wondering what's in the water, and perhaps more importantly, what to do? While government regulators feverishly try to figure out what caused the huge market plunge just over a week ago (which was followed by a huge rebound last week) — did someone really hit the wrong button? —the rest of us are focused on the economic fundamentals and where the markets are likely to go. …

Earn Green While Going Green, Part Two of Two

While you’re changing your lifestyle to go green, why not add some green to your investments? Ron Stein, a new financial columnist for Huntington Patch and a certified financial planner, answers that semi-rhetorical question.

In our last article, we talked about several of the simple alternatives readily available to investors who are looking to put their investments more in line with their environmental concerns without sacrificing performance. Hopefully, I've piqued your interest. While I last talked about some solid basic mutual fund choices that could be core holdings in an investment portfolio, for those looking to spruce up their portfolios by investing more directly in green industries, investors have an exciting smorgasbord of choices to choose from. Solar, wind, water, pollution mitigation are just a few of the industry areas where outstanding growth opportunities lie. Indeed, with the burgeoning availability of mutual funds and ETFs in the "green" …
