Photos: It's All a Facade!

Huntington businesses decorate and advertise with an artistic edge.

Huntington is an area passionate and dedicated to the advancement of the arts. Numerous art organizations, galleries, exhibitions and museums are represented throughout the town.  It should come as no surprise that many of it's buildings are adorned with a creative flair as well. These building facades and sides are painted with murals and in tromp-l’oeil fashion to advertise and also beautify the bare expanse of brick or concrete of the store.  Celebrate our rich artistic heritage while shopping in the village or grabbing a slice of pizza at Guiseppe’s.  Just make sure you aren’t fooled and try to walk through the painted door! Trompe-l’oeil is an art technique that means literally, “deceive the eye." Paintings create an optical illusion …

Not only was the weather beautiful and stunning on Saturday, but so was the art work on display at the opening reception and awards ceremony for the exhibition, Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum 2011. The Heckscher Museum of Art is celebrating its 15th year of representing the talents of high school students with a juried art show. “This show is the culmination of a whole program run by the museum," Kristina Seekamp, associate director of education, said. “The students created their own art in response to their interpretation of artwork in the museum’s collections and the special exhibitions.”  The School Discovery program encourages students to convey these works of art into their own vision by analysis, discussion…

Celebration of a Beloved Huntington Art Teacher

'Truly Amazing' Robert Potter remembered for ability to inspire.

Students, teachers, friends and family paid tribute Thursday night to the late Robert Potter, a popular art teacher at Huntington High School.  Potter, who died suddenly on Nov. 22, taught ceramics and sculpture at the school since 2006 after a major career change and was known for his ability to inspire students. "He was truly an amazing person, both as a friend and teacher," said Ayallah Jeddah, a media arts teacher who started at the school with Potter. "He always had words of wisdom."   The celebration at the high school featured a sea of white T-shirts emblazoned with a reproduction of Potter's license plate "INSPIREU." Parents and friends of St. Anthony's High School art students turned out Saturday to view their creations at the biannual show. The works came in a variety of media, including photo, video, portfolio, drawing and painting and ceramics. Hallway walls were lined with drawings and paintings while photos and videos could be viewed in side rooms. "We are fortunate to have very talented students work in an incredible environment, and the results are beautiful," Marie Novara, the school's art director. About 380 students participated in the show. "It's an opportunity for students to share their artwork with their families," teacher Jennifer Baldwin-Schafer said. Sumi-e Artist Gets Warm Reception at Library

Artist John Clancy visited Huntington Public Library on Oct. 16.

Sumi-e artist John Clancy, whose works have been exhibited in art galleries nationally and are in collections worldwide, recently hosted a reception for his work at the Huntington Public Library's main art gallery. Clancy, a graduate of SUNY Farmingdale with a degree in Advertising, Art and Design who has been an Art Director for more than 25 years, said his Sumi-e paintings are unique because they go beyond simple face-value subject representation. He said the aim of the paintings is to become one with the subject by capturing its life and spirit. "With Sumi-e each brushstroke conveys feelings that try to provoke the observer to contemplate what is before him – to actually get into the picture and experience it," Clancy said. Clancy …

Dinner, Art Sale Benefit Veterans

Nearly 150 gathered Saturday evening to honor veterans and enjoy the work of local artists.

A rejuvenated former gas station at the corner of Park Avenue and Main Street played host to a crowd of veterans and art lovers Saturday night. The fundraiser featured dinner donated by Critics Choice Deli and an art show organized by local artist Erich Preis. In addition to honoring Len Totora, L&L Camera owner who passed away earlier this year, the event raised funds toward the proposed Long Island Center for Veterans Inc., a combination shelter, job placement and counseling facility in Copiague. Their agenda is large: "We want to solve the issue of joblessness and homelessness for veterans on Long Island," said Dominick Mavellia, who owns the gas station property and is partners with Gene Smith and Ken Auerbach on the warehouse space in…
